Why should I microchip and register my pet with PetLink?
Microchipping is a reliable, permanent, one-time service that helps give you peace of mind for your pet’s lifetime. This peace of mind is nearly useless if the microchipped pet is not registered in a database such as PetLink. With accurate registration associated with the unique microchip number, a lost animal can be traced back to its owner as soon as it’s scanned. In the event of a lost & found pet emergency, the PetLink support team is available by phone 24/7/365 at 877-PET-LINK (738-5465).
What type of registration is included with my microchip?
Your pet’s microchip has 1 of 3 registration options attached to it:
- Premium Lifetime Registration – The $29.95 registration fee has been prepaid on your behalf by your veterinarian or shelter organization. No additional fees are required.
- Basic Lifetime Registration – Your pet’s first year with their microchip has been prepaid by your veterinarian or shelter organization. You get unlimited free updates for basic information (address, phone number, email) within that first year. You will be notified on your 1-year anniversary that the one-time registration fee of $24.95 is required.
- No Registration – No registration has been purchased in advance. There is a onetime fee of $29.95 required for lifetime registration.
In all cases, there are no monthly or annual fees associated with your PetLink registration!

Questions About Microchips
How to implant and register a microchip? (video)
What happens if the implanted microchip doesn't work?
In the unlikely event that your PetLink microchip stops working after it is implanted, please have your veterinarian contact PetLink at petlink@petlink.net.
Will the microchip wear out and need to be replaced?
The microchip is passive, which means it does not have an internal battery. When a microchip scanner is passed over it, it is powered by the scanner and will transmit the pet’s ID number. The same microchip will last through your pet’s lifetime.
Is microchipping painful for my pet?
Microchip implantation is no more painful to pets than a flu shot is to a human. A PetLink microchip is as small and thin as a grain of rice and is easily implanted without anesthesia.
Can the microchip migrate or move around after implantation?
When properly implanted, the microchip should not migrate more than an inch or so. If for some reason the microchip has migrated to another part of your pet’s body, check with your vet to ensure your pet is not in danger.
Does a microchip work like a GPS? Why can't I get a physical location for my lost pet?
Microchips cannot be used as tracking devices. They are a form of identification that can be checked with a microchip scanner by a veterinarian or shelter organization.
Can all animals be microchipped?
Microchips can be implanted in just about all species of animals. For more information, visit the World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s website, or ask your local veterinarian.
What if my pet has 2 microchips?
In the event of 2 microchips being implanted into an animal, they will not interfere with each other or effect the way the pet is scanned. Because of its rarity, veterinarians and shelter organizations don’t typically continue to look for a microchip once their reader has detected one.
We recommend that you keep both microchips registered in the PetLink database. You never know which will be detected first!
Microchipping your horse for an FEI Passport
Beginning Jan. 1, 2013, all American horses newly registered with the FEI must be microchipped (2012 FEI Article 1011.1.2.3). The microchip must be ISO 11784/5 compatible, and all microchip information must be entered in the horse’s passport and reported to the Unites States Equestrian Federation (USEF). This requirement applies to initial FEI registration only. Datamars SLIM microchips comply with these regulations.
